It’s important to point out that blepharoplasty does not reduce dark circles, nor was it designed to. Blepharoplasty will remove fatty tissue build-up, and excess skin or muscle, but it does little to remove the discoloration of dark circles. However, there are other cosmetic procedures typically used to address that issue, and you can ask your doctor about those.
It should also be noted that in some cases, upper eyelid surgery, when performed for functional reasons, may be covered by insurance, as mentioned earlier. But lower eyelid surgery is almost always done solely for cosmetic purposes, and therefore not usually covered.
When Do I Need Upper and Lower Eyelid Surgery at the Same Time?
There are times when a patient only needs some excess skin removed, and an upper eyelid lift is sufficient to address the problem. The skin is removed and the remaining skin is tightened.
But if you also have issues below the eye, with puffiness or baggy lower eyelids, then your goal may be to basically overhaul the whole eye. In those cases, it makes sense to have upper and lower eyelids done at the same time.
