What is Gauge & Piercing Repair?

Gauge and piercing repair uses a variety of cosmetic surgery techniques to repair damage to the ears, earlobes and other parts of the body that have been caused by piercings. Gauge piercing is the most commonly observed form of damage, as this style of piercing stretches out the earlobes over time. Once the gauge piercings are removed, the earlobes are left sagging with a large hole that can’t heal and close itself naturally. However, piercing repair can also extend to torn earlobes and stretched earlobes, which can occur after years of heavy or frequent earring usage. Furthermore, piercing repair techniques can be used to address damage caused to the nipples, nose, belly button and other areas where piercings are often made.

What Can Gauge & Piercing Repair Fix?

Gauge piercing repair and other piercing repair techniques are commonly used to address the following concerns:

  • Torn earlobes
  • Stretched earlobes
  • Gauged earlobes
  • Scar tissue removal
  • Closure of piercing holes
  • And more

How Does Gauge & Piercing Repair Work?

Gauge and piercing repair is commonly performed with cosmetic surgery techniques. For starters, these techniques are usually performed with local anesthesia. This type of anesthetic numbs the treatment area, but leaves the patient awake and alert for the duration of the treatment. You can rest assured you’ll be comfortable and pain-free during the repair process. In the case of torn earlobes or smaller holes, the tissue can be sutured together to seal the piercing. In the case of gauged earlobes or significantly stretched earlobes, some of the tissue in the earlobe will be removed to restore the ears to a more natural size. Then, the hole will be sutured together to seal the earlobe together.

While these are the general techniques involved, Dr. Philpott takes a unique approach to each gauge or piercing repair depending on the patient’s needs. During your consultation, you and Dr. Philpott will discuss your treatment goals and identify the repair techniques that will produce the best results for you. At this time, we can provide a detailed explanation on the techniques involved and what you can expect during treatment.

What is the Recovery Process Like After Gauge & Piercing Repair?

The exact recovery process of your gauge or piercing repair will vary depending on the extent of surgery performed on the ear. In most cases, though, during the first week, you’ll need to avoid sleeping on the ears or participating in any activities that could irritate the treatment area. You’ll return to the office one week after your treatment to remove the stitches (sutures) in the ears. Patients can expect a full recovery in 2-3 months.

Can You Re-Pierce Ears After Earlobe Repair?

Yes! After the ears are fully healed from your repair procedure, you can re-pierce the ears and enjoy wearing earrings once again. In order to prevent future stretching and other damage, we recommend limiting the use of heavy earrings.
