The Body Sculpting Center offers breast augmentation to residents of Scottsdale, Phoenix and the surrounding areas in Arizona.

If you’re thinking about breast augmentation surgery, you’re not alone. Breast augmentation has been and remains the most popular type of cosmetic and plastic surgery in the United States. In 2011, more than 300,000 breast augmentations were performed.

You may want to have your breasts augmented to enhance the contour of your body or to add volume to your breasts following pregnancy.  You may feel your breasts are simply too small and want to increase their size. Your breasts may be uneven or lack symmetry. Or, you may want to purse breast reconstruction following a mastectomy.

Whatever reason you choose to have this type of surgery, rest assured Dr. Ethan Philpott is an expert when it comes to breast augmentation, performing thousands of breast procedure surgeries. He has vast experience with silicone and saline implants and is trained in the Keller System for silicone breast implants.  He can also provide you with additional options like LipoAug for breast enhancement and breast lifts that improve the look of sagging breasts.

Surgical Methods for Breast Augmentation

The saline or silicone breast implant will be placed either above or below the pectoral muscle, depending on how much breast tissue you have and your desired outcome. The incision required to insert the implants can be made in one of four locations:

  • Arm pit (Transaxillary Breast Augmentation) – This is a popular endoscopic approach since it doesn’t leave a visible scar on your breasts. Using this method, the implants can be placed over, under, or partially underneath the pectoral muscle.

Since there’s no incision on your breasts, recovery from this type of incision usually occurs within two days, especially if you follow Dr. Philpott’s 24-hour recovery program.

  • Areola (Periareolar Breast Augmentation) – In periareolar breast augmentation, the insertion incision is made in the border of the areola.  The pigmented skin of the areola hides the incision scar. This approach represents one of the most popular types of incisions for breast augmentation. If you decide to have your implants removed at some point, the same incision can be used.  Additionally, if you’re having a breast lift during your breast augmentation, this approach will likely be used.

If your incision is made in the areola and if you follow Dr. Philpott’s recovery protocol, you’ll be able to return to your normal activities within 24 hours of your breast augmentation surgery.

  • Below the breast (Inframammary Breast Augmentation) – The most common incision used when placing implants, the inframammary breast augmentation is made below the breast in the crease. The implant can be placed above, below, or between the muscles using this incision and the implant can be revised via the same incision, if necessary. That reduces the number of scars you may have. One drawback is that the scar will likely be visible when you raise your hands above your head or during intimate contact.

If you receive this type of incision, you should expect to resume normal activities within 24 hours of surgery if you follow Dr. Philpott’s instructions for post-operative care.

24-Hour Recovery from Breast Augmentation Surgery

Historically, the recovery process from breast augmentation surgery has been quite painful. Bruising, bleeding, and torn tissues required the need for narcotic pain relief, which prolonged healing. Dr. Philpott has adopted surgical and post-operative techniques that decrease the amount of bleeding and pain you experience following surgery.

His methods are so effective that your pain will be easily controlled using mild analgesics, rather than powerful narcotic pain relievers. You’ll be encouraged to get back to your typical routine quickly following surgery.  Taking an active, engaged role in your recovery is integral to the success of the 24-hour recovery process.

Your individual circumstances will dictate Dr. Philpott’s recommendation and approach to your surgical procedure. During your initial consultation, you will discuss the available options for breast augmentation, and how you can best achieve your goal. Breast Augmentation FAQs

The incisions from breast augmentation are carefully placed to minimize any visible scars following your procedure. However, the location and visibility of these scars will depend on the surgical approach used to place your implants. In some cases, the scars will surround the nipple, blending in with the color of the areola. In other cases, the scar will be along the crease beneath the breasts, where they will be well-hidden. If you are concerned about the appearance of scars, you can discuss your options during your consultation to determine the breast augmentation approach that will satisfy your goals.

Yes! In most cases, women are still perfectly capable of breastfeeding after their breast augmentation procedure. However, if this is a priority for you, be sure to discuss your needs during your initial consultation. For patients who are planning to breastfeed in the future, we may recommend certain breast implant types or surgical approaches to ensure the ability to do so.

The pain from breast augmentation will be most severe in the days immediately following surgery. During this time, patients can expect to use pain medications to manage this pain. Additionally, we recommend that patients rest as much as possible and follow our post-operative instructions to ensure a smooth recovery and minimize any pain. Most patients are able to discontinue the use of pain medications and return comfortably to their normal lifestyles after a week of treatment.

It is possible to experience changes in nipple sensitivity following your breast implant procedure. Patients may experience reduced sensitivity, heightened sensitivity, or a rare loss of sensitivity. In most cases, these changes are only temporary and will return to normal in the following months.

Between the two types of implants, saline and silicone implants, silicone implants are known to have a more natural look and feel. This is because the silicone gel that fills the implant is most similar to natural breast tissue. The saline implants, which are filled with a sterile saltwater solution, tend to have a less natural feel. However, they offer benefits over silicone implants such as a simpler surgery that requires smaller incisions.
