After losing a substantial amount of weight, you probably want to show off your new body. But, if you have flaps of excess skin on your abdomen, thighs, back, buttocks, or arms, it’s likely that you will remain unsatisfied with the way you look.

Body lift surgery is a way to achieve a more attractive body contour and boost your self-confidence. During the surgery, Dr. Ethan Philpott will remove excess skin and tighten the underlying tissues in your problem areas. Body lifts can also help to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Dr. Philpott can perform body lift surgery on various parts of your body including your abdomen, thighs, buttocks, breasts, and arms. If you have a lot of fatty deposits, a combination of liposuction and body lift procedures will likely be used. However, body lift surgery is not a way to lose weight; rather, it’s intended to help improve the appearance of sagging, stretched skin that results from weight loss, pregnancy or the aging process.

Types of Body Lifts

Tummy Tuck

Tummy tucks, also called abdominoplasties, will improve the appearance of your stomach. During a tummy tuck, Dr. Philpott makes an incision between your navel and pubic hairline. Excess fat, skin, and tissue are removed, and the weakened abdominal muscles are repaired. The procedure delivers immediate, dramatic results.

Lower Body Lift

To address several areas at once, you should consider a lower body lift. The surgery is quite involved and requires you to be in the operating room for several hours. Recovery may take several weeks. However, following the procedure, your abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, and waist will look sleeker, more defined, and tighter. The results are immediate. You’ll love the way your body looks, and your clothes will fit better and more comfortably.

Arm Lift

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, addresses excess skin on your upper arms. Following surgery, you’ll have a firmer, more visually pleasing upper arm. You’ll finally feel comfortable wearing sleeveless shirts!

At The Body Sculpting Center, we offer two types of arm lifts:

  • The short-scar arm lift can address mild excess skin in the inner arm only.  The incision is placed in the armpit (axilla).
  • A traditional arm lift can address moderate to severe excess skin.  The incision extends from armpit to elbow.  The traditional arm lift may have a classic “T” incision in the armpit, or a “Z”-plasty incision to minimize the appearance of scarring.

Breast Lift

If your breasts have lost their shape due to weight loss, aging, or motherhood, Dr. Philpott can perform a breast lift, or mastopexy. The surgical procedure raises and reshapes your breasts. Implants can be added during a breast lift surgery, leaving you with the round, shapely breasts you desire. Breast lift surgery can be performed in a variety of ways, depending on your specific needs and desires. Dr. Philpott is well-versed in all methods, and he will discuss your options during a consultation.

Thigh Lift

In the summer, shorts and fashionable skirts may be off limits if loose skin on your thighs causes you embarrassment. A thigh lift removes excess skin, giving you shapely, more attractive legs. Liposuction may also be included in the procedure to remove stubborn fat deposits and cellulite.

If you’ve had lap banding or gastric bypass surgery, you shouldn’t pursue body lift surgery until your weight has been steady for two months.

Body Lift FAQs

At The Body Sculpting Center, a body lift typically includes two or more of the following procedures:

  • Tummy tuck
  • Arm lift
  • Breast lift
  • Thigh lift
A body lift and tummy tuck use similar techniques but typically provide very different results. A body lift involves a combination of skin removal and skin-tightening procedures including an arm lift, breast lift, thigh lift, and the removal of excess fat around the general upper and lower body. A tummy tuck, on the other hand, focuses specifically on removing excess skin from the abdominal region. If you’re unsure whether you’d benefit more from a tummy tuck or body lift, we encourage you to come in for a private consultation with Dr. Philpott.
While it may take up to six months for the body to completely recover after a body lift, most patients are able to return to work and most regular daily activities within 10 to 14 days of treatment. Dr. Philpott and his team will ask that you refrain from high-intensity exercise and heavy lifting for up to eight weeks following treatment. Our medical team will provide you with detailed post-operative care instructions to help you have a quick recovery.
Following your body lift procedure, you will experience swelling, bruising, and tightness around your treated areas. These side effects are normal and typically resolve on their own within a few weeks of treatment. Dr. Philpott and his team will provide you with detailed post-operative care instructions to help you manage your discomfort throughout your recovery.
On average, our patients can lose up to 20lbs of skin during their body lift procedure. It’s important to remember that a body lift is not a weight-loss treatment and should not be viewed as such. Instead, your body lift and other skin removal surgeries should be used as a supplement to an already healthy and active lifestyle. Ideal candidates for a body lift are within 20lbs of their ideal weight and have realistic expectations of their results.
