Gravity and motherhood can wreak havoc on your breasts. The effects of pregnancy, breastfeeding, and the aging process can cause your breasts to sag and lose volume. A surgical procedure called a breast lift, or mastopexy, will effectively raise and reshape sagging breasts.  Dr. Ethan Philpott will recommend a specific type of breast lift based on the amount of sagging you have and your desired result. Three types of breast lift surgeries are routinely performed, and Dr. Philpott is skilled at each.If you have only a small amount of sagging, Dr. Philpott will make an incision around the areola. Moderate amounts of sagging will require an incision around the areola, as well as down the front of the breast. The most severe cases will require an incision made around the areola, down the front of the breast, as well as in the breast crease.

You can opt to have your breasts enlarged during your breast lift. Dr. Philpott can offer you a variety of options for breast augmentation.

Breast Lift FAQs

While your breast lift will likely cause swelling, bruising, tenderness, and discomfort for the following six to eight weeks following surgery, patients report returning to their normal daily activities including work within just seven to 10 days. Recovery may be uncomfortable, however, pain medication prescribed by Dr. Philpott will help keep your discomfort at bay.

The results of your breast lift have the potential to last for years depending on your skin’s natural aging process. Because the skin loses elasticity as you age, your breasts may succumb to natural sagging as you get older. Weight fluctuations may also cause a disruption to your results. That being said, patients find they are still happy with their breast lift results up to 10 years following surgery.

No, you will not lose a cup size following your breast lift. Unlike a breast reduction, no breast or fatty tissue is removed during the surgical process. Instead, excess skin that has stretched over time and contributes to drooping is removed from around the breast. Patients may find that their bras fit more comfortably or looser following surgery, as this excess skin may crowd your current bra.

While there are many “tests” you can perform to determine if you need a breast lift, the best way to find out if you need one is to think about how you feel. If you’re not confident in your current body and desire a more perky chest, a breast lift may be right for you. Dr. Philpott and his team will be more than happy to evaluate your breasts if you are still unsure whether a breast lift is your best option.

It is typically not recommended you go braless following a breast lift. The lack of support from a bra following a breast lift can put strain on the breasts, causing the skin to once again lose its elasticity prematurely. Dr. Philpott and his medical team generally recommend finding a supportive and comfortable fitting bra to reduce this strain on your skin.
