What Is a Mommy Makeover?

Body Contouring in Phoenix, AZ

As your baby grows inside of you, vertical muscles in the abdomen separate during pregnancy, causing the abdomen to sag. With pregnancy, you will notice changes in other parts of your body as well. Your breasts will change. If you’ve gained a lot of baby weight, you may have extra fat or sagging skin on your thighs or buttocks.

After giving birth, you will work to get your pre-baby body back. But often, diet and exercise simply aren’t enough. When this happens, a mommy makeover may be the answer.

What’s Involved in a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is any combination of procedures that are performed to  help you achieve your post-baby body goals. The most common procedures in a mommy makeover include an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) and a breast augmentation, but you may also decide to include other procedures to reach your specific goals. Your mommy makeover may include any of the following procedures:

Many women decide to have all of their concerns addressed at once in a single surgery. This makes sense because you would only go under anesthetic once and you would have a single recovery and downtime after the procedure.

How Will Pregnancy Change My Body?

Everyone is different. And while some women will not experience major body changes after pregnancy, most women do. These changes can include:

  • Drooping and sagging
  • Abdominal stretch marks
  • Breast deflation
  • Deposits of body fat that are resistant to diet and exercise, especially in the abdomen, thighs or buttocks
  • Separation of the abdominal muscles resulting in bulging of the abdominal wall
  • Reduced sensation during sex due to stretched or torn vaginal tissues

When Should I Have My Mommy Makeover?

Before you have your mommy makeover, you must give your body time to rebound from pregnancy and childbirth. Wait at least six months to have a mommy makeover and wait until you are done breastfeeding.

Each time you get pregnant, your body will experience significant changes. That’s why it’s best to wait until you are done adding to your family to have a mommy makeover. Vertical muscles in the abdomen that are tightened during surgery can separate again during pregnancy, so having more children will simply undo the work you’ve had done. With additional pregnancies, your breasts will change. You may develop fat deposits and loose skin in certain areas. Wait until you are done having children before getting a mommy makeover.
