Do Dermal Fillers and Injectables Hurt?

Dermal fillers and injectables are some of America’s most popular non-surgical treatments to get rid of fine lines and wrinkles around the face. Although many of our patients come in knowing about their dermal filler and injectable of choice, they are still concerned their treatment will be painful. Let’s go over what you can expect during your dermal filler and injectable treatment and clear things up where lines may have been blurred.

What Exactly do Dermal Fillers and Injectables do?

Injectables in Phoenix, AZ

Let’s start with the basics. Dermal fillers and injectables are minimally invasive, non-surgical cosmetic treatments that smooth away fine lines and wrinkles around the face. Contrary to popular belief, dermal fillers and injectables are not the same thing.

Dermal fillers, like Juvederm® and Restylane®, use a hyaluronic acid-based gel to add volume back into areas of the face that have sunken to create wrinkles over time. Injectables like Botox® and Dysport®, on the other hand, use an injectable gel that relaxes the muscles in the face causing fine lines and wrinkles to appear. Dermal fillers are typically used to treat fine lines and wrinkles around the lower half of the face, whereas injectables are mainly focused on the upper half.

What Can I Expect During my Appointment?

All dermal filler and injectable treatments will be conducted in a very similar way. Typically, dermal filler and injectable treatments only take about 45 minutes to complete, with 15 minutes of that session being the actual treatment itself. The other half-hour is dedicated to applying a topical anesthetic to the area and ensuring you’re completely numb before treatment begins. Most of our patients report feeling minimal to no discomfort throughout their entire treatment.

How Long do Dermal Fillers and Injectables Last?

The answer to this question really depends on what type of dermal filler or injectable treatment you receive. Dermal fillers typically have a longer lifespan than injectables do, with results lasting up to 12-18 months. Dr. Philpott will go over your personalized treatment plan with you during your one-on-one consultation, where he’ll give you a timeline to receive maintenance treatments that will help you keep your desired appearance.
