Thermage®, a medical device company founded in 1995, has developed an advanced US FDA approved method for tightening skin through a radio frequency device they call ThermaCool TC™. According to our technician, “Thermage® requires no incisions, no recovery time and can be completed in less than an hour.”
Before Thermage® treatment begins, an anesthetic cream is applied to the skin (other forms of sedation can be used upon request). The tip of the hand unit for the ThermaCool TC™ (shown above) delivers a brief, intense heating sensation that tightens the deep collagen fibers of the skin and its underlying tissue. This deep thermal tightening of collagen also signals a natural biological repair process that causes additional skin tightening and restoration of younger skin appearance. A cooling spray is delivered before, during and after each application of the Thermage® tip to reduce discomfort.
Although a single Thermage® treatment can produce good results, our doctors and aesthetician can gauge how many Thermage® treatments are required to achieve the optimal results for your skin. The Thermage® system is in no way a replacement for the traditional “facelift” procedure but is an effective method for those not yet needing a surgical facelift. The results of the Thermage® treatment are not typically instantaneous; but the tightening occurs gradually over a six month period.

Above, four months after the Thermage® procedure there is new and denser collagen and an appreciable increase in the thickness of the epidermis. |
The Thermage® procedure reduces the signs of aging skin by actually tightening the underlying tissue. It is currently used for non-surgical brow lifts and the non-surgical tightening of facial wrinkles on the forehead, around the eye, the mid and lower face and the neck. The Thermage® procedure is also known as ThermaLift, Thermal Lifting, Therma Plasty and Thermoplastic contouring.

Here are some common Thermage® questions:
How does Thermage® work?
The Thermage® radio-frequency (RF) energy uniformly heats the dermis while cooling and protecting the epidermis. Thermage® is designed to cause immediate collagen contraction followed by new collagen production which occurs over a period of time. The Thermage® procedure is the only non-invasive method to tighten loose skin.
back to questions What does a Thermage® Procedure feel like?
Each time a Thermage® treatment is delivered, there is an immediate cool sensation followed by a brief hot sensation, followed again by a cool sensation. An anesthetic cream applied one hour before the Thermage® procedure numbs the surface of the skin to help make the treatment more comfortable. Your physician may offer additional measures to increase your comfort.
back to questions How long will the Thermage® Procedure take?
Depending on the size of the area treated, the Thermage® procedure itself may take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour. Your physician may require that you arrive an hour before your Thermage® procedure for administration of an anesthetic cream.
back to questions
After the Thermage® treatment, when can I return to my normal activities?
You may return to your normal activities immediately after your Thermage® treatment, as there is usually no “downtime.” Minimal redness is seen in some patients but in most cases it disappears shortly after treatment. Heat-related complications may occur but are uncommon. There is no special care needed after a Thermage® treatment. As part of your skin care program, sunscreen is recommended.
back to questions When will I notice results from my Thermage® treatment?
Recently published studies, conducted by Thermage®, show that measurable tightening improvements appear gradually over 2 to 6 months after a single treatment session. However, many patients report seeing an earlier response to Thermage®.
back to questions How many Thermage® treatments will I need?
A single Thermage® treatment has produced good results in a significant number of patients. However, your doctor will assess the number and frequency of Thermage® treatments required to achieve optimal results for your skin.
back to questions How long will the effects of the Thermage® Procedure last?
The Thermage® procedure causes an immediate tightening of the collagen structure with additional skin tightening over time. Unpublished reports by experienced physicians indicate that Thermage® treatment results may last as long as 18 months or longer, based on the patient's natural aging process.
back to questions How safe is Thermage®?
The Thermage® procedure is very safe. Although it is possible that skin damage can occur, this advanced treatment has been studied carefully in hundreds of patients with minimal reports of lasting adverse effects.
back to questions How is the Thermage ThermaCool TC™ System used to treat acne?
The treatment of acne, including both severe and cystic acne, is an exciting and new indication for the Thermage® technology.
