Patient Spotlight
Meet Ruth Cook. She is another Body Sculpting Center 24-hour recovery success story.

Dear Dr. Borsand and Staff,

My name is Ruth Cook and I had a breast augmentation (at the Body Sculpting Center) November 12, 2003. I wanted to thank you all so much for making my procedure so wonderful. I live about 3 hours from Phoenix and my husband is a shift worker, so I was always worried about how and when to fit it all in. I’m still so amazed at how everything did fall into place and how quickly everything moved along.

Before I even came to the Body Sculpting Center, I had heard nothing but nice things. My sister had the same procedure done there about 4 years ago and she was very pleased. I was a little afraid, actually a lot, only because I have a low tolerance to pain. And I have to say that I am still waiting for the pain... on a scale of 1 to 10 in the pain department, I can honestly say I was a 1. I was a little achy, but that was it. I didn’t even need or use the Demerol. The Motrin and the muscle relaxer did wonders.

When I got home about 3 days after surgery, I was constantly reminding myself to take it easy. I have two young boys so I’m always on the go. I love to clean, and I felt like I could vacuum!!

I also wanted to thank you, Dr. Borsand, for removing about eight little skin tags along with my surgery. You didn’t have to do that at all, but you did. It’s expensive getting those taken off by a dermatologist and you saved me money!! I remember you asking me if I would mind, because you are a perfectionist and it made me feel really good, confident and happy that I chose the right doctor. Someone who actually takes the time and goes beyond. I just wanted to say thank you all for making my experience such a good one. You are all so professional and nice! I will recommend you to everyone!!!!

Thank you Always,
Ruth Cook

P.S. I want to also say thank you to one of your staff members, Tonya. I have called about five times with questions and she has answered every one of them! She didn’t even make me feel like I was calling too much.

The Present is the Gift of Today!
So why live in the past?

I recently attended a Tony Robbins “Unleash The Power Within” four day seminar. If you haven’t attended one, I highly recommend it. I found myself in a position to change my state at the drop of a hat. You may be asking, “What does he mean, change his state?” What I mean is that I can recognize when I am in a bad state and make changes to my physiology to put myself in a positive state. I also came to realize that experience is all a matter of perspective.

You see, sometimes, if you let it happen, an event can change your life. The question is, how will you perceive that event in your mind? Will you use it as a crutch to prevent you from taking risks in the future or will you use it to drive you to success in business and relationships? Too often, we do the former. We let the memory of a negative experience replay over and over in our heads. We project past experiences onto present situations and don’t allow ourselves to be open to opportunity. Did you know that every two years, every atom in your body is new? I didn’t either. This means that an experience that happened to you three years ago actually happened to a different body altogether!

Make the most out of the present. Our present state is the only thing we can really control. The next time you’re in a negative state, try this: change your breathing and posture to the way it is when you’re happy. Most importantly, change your face to the way it is when you’re happy and before you know it, you're feeling good and so are the people around you.

The Scarlett Letter
Phoenix to Philly non-stop

As the summer approaches, I find myself again packing boxes in preparation for moving. I have accepted a plastic and reconstructive fellowship in Philadelphia, PA and will be starting July 1st. It is with some sadness that I leave my Body Sculpting Center family, but this opportunity was too rare to not pursue. There are currently only two fellowships of this type in the country. My time here with Dr. Borsand has provided me with a tremendous education and personal growth. I want to thank Dr. Borsand and the staff of the Body Sculpting Center for a wonderful year and I hope to visit this winter. I am not looking forward to the snow and ice that Philly is so well known for. I’ll let you all know if the cheesesteaks are worth the drive.

Young From The Inside Out
the other half of the equation

Achieving the best post-surgery results means taking care of our skin and bodies through diet and exercise. But with all the diets out there, which is best for maintaining youthful skin and a firm, healthy body?
Much of the body's aging is due to a chemical process known as oxidation when during metabolic processes such as digestion, tissues are exposed to oxygen and free radicals are produced. These free radicals attack cells stopping them from functioning correctly, which can lead to many physical ailments and rapid aging. An apple browning when it is cut open and the rusting of a penny are both examples of oxidation reactions. Antioxidants counteract the damaging effects of oxidation, therefore slowing the aging process.

Where do antioxidants come from? Most can be found in fruits and vegetables, but tea, coffee, chocolate and even beer and wine contain antioxidants as well.
Although antioxidants may appear like the fountain of youth, some people should take care when using them. Those taking cholesterol-lowering medications should consult their doctor prior to taking antioxidants as they may interfere. Smokers should not take too much beta carotene or Vitamin A.

Eating food low on the Glycemic Index can also slow aging and prevent disease. The Glycemic Index is a ranking of carbohydrates based on their effect on blood sugar levels, which also plays a part in the oxidation process. Foods with low GIs are preferable because they break down more slowly and therefore have less of an effect on the levels of sugar in the blood. A low GI diet can aid in weight loss, improve diabetes, keep you fuller longer, and prolong physical endurance.

As a general rule, eating fruits and vegetables, grainy breads, oat, barley, bran cereals, proteins and fats are a good way to keep your diet low on the Glycemic Index. Starchy vegetables (usually light in color) such as potatoes and cauliflower should be consumed in minimal amounts.

While cosmetic surgery can help us achieve that perfect body and flawless skin that we always dreamed of, it is only part of the equation. We must do our own part to maintain our results through diet and exercise, allowing us to ward off the effects of time and stay beautiful for years to come.

The Nelson Report
BSC welcomes new fellow

Kristin Nelson is the newest member of the BSC staff and will be working as a fellow in our training program. She hails from the Midwest city of Green Bay, Wisconsin and has come all the way to the Southwest because of the amazing cosmetic surgery training at the Body Sculpting Center.

Kristin did not start out as a doctor, but had a prior incarnation as an engineer for NASA! Wanting to work more with people she headed to medical school in Kirksville, Missouri where she met her husband, Brent. She also completed her residency in Otolaryngology/Facial Plastic Surgery in Missouri. Brent is now doing his family practice residency at the Mayo Clinic, so there soon will be two practicing doctors in the family.

Preferring the sun and palm trees to the cold winters and miles of farm land, Kristin and her husband plan on staying in the Valley permanently.

We are proud to welcome Dr. Nelson to the Body Sculpting Center team. You will certainly have the chance to work with many wonderful and interesting patients and staff.
