Patient Spotlight
Susan volunteered to have CBS 5 follow her through surgery

Our patient spotlight this month did something a little different. She let CBS 5 follow her from the day before surgery to the day after surgery to give a first-hand perspective on what our 24-hour recovery program has to offer.
Dear Dr. Borsand and Staff,

“I am writing today to thank you for the exquisite tropical arrangement that you had delivered to me. It is amazing! I have always admired such arrangements and wanted to have one. Now I do, thank you.

I am also writing to say I feel like I should be sending you flowers! I am so pleased with the entire experience for my cosmetic surgery, from initial consultation to today. I am sure I will be pleased for a lifetime. I chose to have breast enlargement and through consultation with Dr. Borsand, opted for the 24-hour recovery procedure. I must admit that I was skeptical that such quick recovery could be possible. I am now a true believer from first-hand experience.

The staff was great, from my consultant assistant to the attending nurse, to the anesthesiologist and to the wonderfully experienced Dr. Borsand. I woke up after only 45 minutes in the surgery room having no pain and feeling great. After only a 1/2 hour of recovery, I left the facility. I rested at home for about 4 hours and then was up visiting family and watching television. We all went out to dinner and I took a shower that evening. I spent the night at a friend’s house and watched movies. The next day I was carrying on with my normal life. I never had any pain and only took ibuprofen for the feeling of pressure. It has only been 6 days and already my breasts are taking on the natural, beautiful shape they will finally become. I am very pleased with the appearance. The swelling was quite minimal and there was no bruising.

I am proud to have been a part of the taping by Channel 5 of this 24-hour recovery procedure. I have referred other interested candidates already that saw the coverage on the evening news and were anxious to acquire information. I am glad to be living proof that this is a no no-nsense, true technological quick recovery procedure.”

Thank you Dr. Borsand and Staff!

Hands of Time
Do your hands give away your age?

One of the latest areas of advancement in cosmetic and aesthetic treatment is hand rejuvenation because both women and men notice similar defining marks of age on their hands. In retaliation to the encumbrance of age, a couple of quick treatments have been explored that can make the hands fuller and more attractive, giving off a more youthful appearance.

The Thermage® treatment has become a popular method in hand rejuvenation for treating skin on the hands that becomes thin and loose and begins to wrinkle. Thermage® thickens the skin and increases elasticity by stimulating the collagen levels through a non-surgical radio frequency beam. This returns the skin to more youthful levels. While we have not performed Thermage® on the hands as of this writing, we have had the privilage of viewing great results from others who are performing this procedure on hands. The result is a tighter and fuller appearance to the hands.

Another treatment gaining popularity in hand rejuvenation is the FPL Foto Facial treatment. We have all seen pigmented blotches of skin on the hands. These freckled spots give off the appearance of age, thus the name “age spots.” The FPL Foto Facial procedure acts on these sun damaged and hyper-pigmented skin cells and is able to greatly reduce and, in many cases, eliminate the amount of age spots that appear on the hands.

More information about Thermage® is available on our website as well as video clips of the procedure in action.

The Scarlett Letter
If you can’t stand the heat...

As the weather starts warming up, we all start spending more time outside. Our sun exposure increases and proper skin care becomes a necessity. The question of which sunscreen to use and whether or not these products cause Vitamin D deficiency arise. I have recently published an article on ultraviolet radiation and ways to decrease your chance of skin cancer.
In short, UVA and UVB protection are a must and children are more susceptible to the effects of ultraviolet radiation. In addition, Vitamin D supplementation may be appropriate for a large number of us, whether we are using sunscreen or not. Vitamin D deficiency is becoming an epidemic in our adult population. Rhiannon Rupprecht is the Body Sculpting Center’s medical aesthetician and has great knowledge of the products available to help us protect ourselves from ultraviolet radiation. Please take advantage of Rhiannon’s complimentary consultations and help decrease your chance of developing skin cancer. Copies of my article are available at the office.

Lipo...Shifting?
The evolution of liposculpture

As we have mentioned before, we like to stay on the forefront of the aesthetic medical community. This time, we are introducing a new development to the valley that allows for fat transfer without ever removing the fat from the body. It’s called liposhifting. The procedure utilizes a new instrument from Buenos Aires, ArgentinaLiposhifting Before & After that is not too dissimilar in looks from a miniature cheese grater, and, unbelieveably enough, it functions similar to a cheese grater. The tool is called Micro Graft Fat Cutter, or MGFC, and it comes in 3 different diameters for different body areas. The concept is relatively simple. A patient may have an indentation in the skin, whether it be from injury or a previous liposuction imperfection or just something that has developed over time. In days gone by, fat would be harvested from one location and injected into the new location. Now, with the MGFC, fat can be broken down and pushed over to the area to be filled. This method is ideal for indentations that often occur in the legs or buttocks, as there is usually a readily available supply of fat in a nearby area. This method is not suited for areas like the breast or face or any place where there is not a nearby fat pocket. In this case, a traditional fat transfer is still the best method.

Supercharged FotoFacial
Bright light! Bright light!

Fotofacials have proven to be one of the best methods for treating hyperpigmented skin. It is fast and effective. But what if we told you that you could achieve the same results as before, if not better, but with only half the treatments? Sounds too good to be true, right? Wrong. We have begun using Levulan, a new photosensitizing topical agent. Levulan’s unique formula was intended to be triggered by the FPL (FotoFacial) treatment to remove sun damaged pre-cancerous zones and spots called actinic keratoses. As it turns out, it does more than that. The Levulan formula, when activated, also reduces sun damage, fine lines, and blotchy pigmentation. Due to it’s unique ability to minimize pores and reduce oil glands, Levulan is also effective in treating stubborn acne, rosacea and improving the appearance of some acne scars. As with all medical advancements, the Levulan topical treatment is not without risk. Due to the photosensitive properties, Levulan can make the skin very sensitive to direct sunlight, resulting in burned or blistered skin. It is required that the patient receiving treatment stay out of direct sunlight for at least 24 hours after treatment. If your skin was already light sensitive before the treatment, it is recommended that you stay out of direct sunlight for 48 hours following treatment. Our paramedical aesthetician, Rhiannon, performs the procedure. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to give her a call at (480) 464-8000.

It's All Part of a Healthy Make-up

We now carry Jane Iredale make-up! For those of you who are not familiar with this make-up, it is the next best thing to perfect skin. It is four products in one: foundation, powder, concealer and sunscreen. The pressed powder is SPF 17 and the loose powder is SPF 20. The minerals in this make-up give instant chemical-free sun protection. It is water resistant, and there is no talc. With one quick application, you will have coverage all day and it won't fade, crease or smear. It provides coverage on any skin type and is non-comedogenic and oil free. There is only a minimum allergy risk, no perfume or dyes. The minerals in the Jane Iredale line have anti-inflammatory properties to help with acne and rosacea.
It is my experience that this make-up can be applied immediately following microdermabrasion or a peel and will cover the redness. Application after laser resurfacing is up to the treating physician. Iredale can be used with any skincare regimen, and this line is so safe to use that it is highly recommended by cosmetic surgeons and dermatologists.

Please give me a call if you have any questions! (480) 464-8000
