This Quarter's Spotlight!
Rhinoplasty Surgery

This quarter we’re aiming our spotlight on a surgery called rhinoplasty or more commonly referred to as a “Nose Job.” Dr. Leon of the Body Sculpting Center is proving with his refined techniques that nobody knows noses like he does.

One of the most distinguishing facial features is typically the nose. They vary in width and length, they can be pointed or round, flat or prominent. The nostrils on some are flared, and others are tiny slits. Sometimes the ridge has a bump on it, or the tip has a crease in it. Is there such a thing as a perfect nose? Definitely not! But there are certain traits that make noses less or more desirable to some. For instance, a bump on the ridge of the nose, for some, can act as a distraction from the rest of their facial beauty. A deviated septum (the cartilage in the nose) can lead to breathing problems and snoring. At the Body Sculpting Center our specialist in facial surgery, Dr. Enrique Leon, has had the opportunity to help hundreds of patients achieve the shape that they find most desirable with their noses using the surgical procedure known as rhinoplasty.

All procedures performed at the Body Sculpting Center’s state-certified outpatient surgery center begin with a consultation with the doctor performing the procedure. During the consultation, Dr. Leon will discuss with the patient the characteristics of their nose that they wish to emphasize or de-emphasize. Patients often bring in pictures of other noses that they have clipped from magazines to help explain their desired outcome. Dr. Leon also provides a photo book for the patient to look through featuring before and after photos of other patients who he has performed the procedure on. With information provided during the consultation, he can evaluate and explain what is most realistic for the patient to expect and the patient has the option to schedule surgery.

Since Dr. Leon has had the opportunity to refine his surgical skills with many years of experience, a typical rhinoplasty at the Body Sculpting Center takes approximately 1 ½ hours. Recovery from the procedure occurs in two stages. Initially after surgery, the patient’s nose is supported with a splint known as a Denver Nasal Splint. This splint is removed after one week and replaced by 3M Steristrips, which are to be left on for up to three weeks. The Steristrips are all but invisible and go mostly unnoticed by the casual observer. In years past, this procedure entailed excessive bruising around the nose and eyes. However, with refined techniques used by Dr. Leon at the Body Sculpting Center, bruising is kept to a minimal and patients often only experience light bruising, if any.

Vaginal What?
A New Frontier In Surgery

Though it’s a touchy subject, in fact so touchy that some magazines won’t let us publish ads about it, vaginal surgery has become more popular over the past few years. Women who are uncomfortable with the appearance or feel of their most intimate parts now have the option to have a cosmetic specialist help them to change that. With more than 20 years experience as a gynecologist and having delivered over 4,500 babies, Dr. William Shuell at the Body Sculpting Center is that specialist.

According to Dr. Shuell, most women he sees are interested in vaginal surgery for one of two reasons: body image or discomfort. Those concerned with body image are looking to make their vagina more symmetrical and to reduce protrusion of the labia minora (inner vaginal lips). For them, it’s a simple matter of appearance. For women who are experiencing discomfort, the majority of these patients are active women who are concerned with their labia minora protruding too far and creating discomfort in common activities. Women who have gone through childbirth and have noticed a change in the appearance or responsiveness from their vaginas are another common demographic of patients for this procedure. Sometimes vaginal laxity (stretching of vaginal tissue) is present, which can reduce sensation as well as lead to urinary incontinence or leakage from simple activities such as laughing, sneezing and bending over.

Labiaplasty is used to correct the issue of protruding labia minora. This procedure utilizes either a laser or a radio-frequency device to excise the excess tissue. Sutures are then used to seal the excised ends of the labia minora. For vaginal laxity, the procedure utilized is aesthetic vaginoplasty. Again, the surgeon uses a laser or radio-frequency device to make the incision and then uses sutures to reattach the muscle and tissues which in effect “tightens” the vagina. Another common procedure used to sensitize the vagina during intercourse is clitoral de-hooding. This is where a percentage of the hood on the clitoris is excised allowing more of the clitoris to be exposed. This essentially allows for easier clitoral stimulation during intercourse. With all of these procedures there is typically no visible scarring and sexual activity can resume in approximately six weeks. These and other vaginal procedures can be performed together in a package we refer to as Laser Vaginal Renewal®. In addition, Dr. Shuell is also currently doing a study on enhancement of the G-spot. Contact our office for details on participating in this study.

Skin Renewal
Reduce The Signs Of Aging

Even though the BodyNew MedSpa facility is still under construction, the Body Sculpting Center is, as always, offering a full line of skin care treatments. Our aesthetic staff, made up of Tracy and Christine, are well trained in all the latest technologies for the skin. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular skin treatments available at the Body Sculpting Center:

Thermage® – This treatment is sometimes referred to as a non-surgical facelift though its abilities aren’t limited to the face. Thermage® is a radio frequency device which delivers a brief, yet intense thermal jolt triggering the tightening of collagen fibers in the skin and underlying tissue. This reduces the signs of aging and stimulates new collagen growth. The Thermage® treatment can be used on the face, hands, around the eyes and other areas of the body. The effects of Thermage® can last for years to come.

Fraxel® – Just as a damaged painting is delicately restored one small area at a time, or a photographic image is altered pixel by pixel, Fraxel® Laser Treatment improves your appearance by affecting only a fraction of your skin at a time with thousands of tiny microscopic laser spots. Fraxel® is an ideal treatment for acne scars, age spots/brown spots, melasma and wrinkles around the eyes with no down time!

Portrait® - Portrait® plasma skin regeneration is a simple procedure that takes between 20 and 30 minutes. Using this new modern energy, Portrait® creates new life for your skin at its very foundation, replacing old damaged collagen with significant amounts of new collagen and replacing damaged elastin tissue—the keys to quality, long-lasting improvement. Portrait® also has the unique ability to produce ongoing improvement – up to one year following treatment.

Levulan® & Blu-U® Technology – These two technologies were designed to work together to treat sun-damaged skin as well as mild to severe active acne, acne scars and unsightly spider veins using intense pulses of light.

These are just some of the many skin care treatments available at the Body Sculpting Center. We are also proud to offer a full line of specialty skin care products from Obagi® and Avima.® In addition, the Body Sculpting Center also carries Jane Iredale Make-up,® a line of specially formulated mineral based skin care make-up designed to help the skin breathe and stay protected in the sun, rain or whatever is thrown at it.

Botox Cosmetic® & Fillers
The Latest In Injectibles

Wow! They are really coming up with novel treatments with rapid recovery and excellent results! At the 15th annual International Symposium of Cosmetic Lasers, a whole day was used to discuss and demonstrate live the latest Botox Cosmetic® and filler applications. NEW: Botox Cosmetic® to raise the eyebrow both toward the nose and to the outside for a more alert and less tired look. Also, for those who have lost the smile on their face with the corners of the mouth now pointing down, Botox Cosmetic® can elevate the corners. For those who keep the lips pursed, Botox Cosmetic® can soften that look as well. One treatment usually lasts 5 to 6 months.

What about fillers? What can we fill and how long will it last? With new FDA approved fillers, the newest application for use is the tear trough area by the nose. Once filled, this can take away that sunken, tired look. Other popular areas for fillers are the nasolabial folds (those deep lines that extend vertically from the nose to the chin on either side of the mouth), between the eyes and along the side of the mouth as well as the lips or chin. The newer fillers can last from five months to more than two years depending on which one is used. Come on in and let us show you what can be done with the combination of Botox Cosmetic® and fillers. We’ve made it convenient; just call and one of our trained physicians will treat you that day!
