What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment (HBOT)?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) in Phoenix, AZOxygen is essential to human life. In a normal day, a healthy adult will inhale nearly 6 pounds of oxygen. By comparison, on average, we absorb 2 pounds of oxygen into our bloodstreams in a given day. Our bodies use this inhaled oxygen in a variety of ways – to create new cells and fight disease and to heal from injury to name just a few. Hyperbaric oxygen treatment can speed healing by delivering nearly three times the normal oxygen to tissues.

During the hyperbaric oxygen therapy session, the patient is placed inside the hyperbaric chamber. While inside, patients breathe pure oxygen at 10 times the normal rate. Within a very short period of time, the body’s tissues are saturated with excessive levels of oxygen. This “oxygen overload” has been scientifically proven to speed tissue healing and inhibit infection.

What does HBOT feel like? Is it safe?

When prescribed by a physician and performed under close medical supervision, HBOT is extremely safe and produces no long-term side effects. The sensation of being inside a hyperbaric oxygen chamber is similar to pressurization experience when flying in an airplane. Patients commonly feel pressure in the ears, a sensation that is resolved automatically once the pressure in the chamber is released at the end of the treatment session.

Most patients experience very little discomfort during treatment. They often watch TV, listen to music or even sleep while their HBOT is taking place.
